The secret is traffic. Without traffic your store will do nothing. Gone are the days when you could just create an online store and hope that Google and other search engines will find you. Do not try to be like Amazon and sell everything at once, it just won't work. Amazon has billions of dollars to spend on advertising and branding and do it all, you on the hand other most likely have a shoestring budget when you are getting started.

Try typing in something like "online store" into Googles search engine, you get 252,000,000 results. Now try typing something much more specific, ie "kids educational toys" and instead you get 211,000 results. The more specific query is finding about 8% of the results of the first query. Would you rather compete for a listing on the first query or the second? It's going to be easier to get listed under the second more specific query.

Some niches are more popular and thus more crowded then others. The more crowded with competitors the harder it will be for you to rank well. For instance something like weight loss is much more overrun with websites then butterfly collecting but there is also most likely more people searching about weight loss then butteryfly collecting.

Choosing the right niche with the right amount of supply and demand can mean the difference between a successfull website and a complete failure.

How do you show up on page 1 and not page 10 for your specific query and how do you even know what niche to choose?

Everyday Google sends millions of visitors to sites all across the net. How do you become one of those lucky sites? The key is writing good quality content. In order to write good content you should choose a topic that you are truly interested in, knowledgeable about, and have a lot to write on. If you have good content people will link to your content and Google will find you. The more people who like your content, the higher relevancy Google will give you and the better your search engine position. A better search engine position leads to increased traffic.
